Published in SLiNK Magazine

I did a few illustrations for the Fashion Magazine SLiNK to go with a couple of articles. I had to illustrate 'relaxation', a 'Woman looking into a mirror' and a 'woman in a blue outfit' sounds simple enough but took me a while to think of a relaxation concept, to end up with bath and candles aha original huh?, and this is how they turned out. So chuffed that they appear in the magazine. This is available online as well as printed just have a butchers here:

It's a great magazine with some real interesting articles, it's aimed at curvy women, the shoots in there are great especially the 3D one in this issue. It also proves that bigger fashion can be just as stylish and look just as good which is really nice to see that market start to be catered too, so do have a look!

Published in CANDID Magazine

I illustrated a series of images for issue 5 of CANDID magazine 'Illustrating the Industry' to read the entire magazine and see my work click here:

My works on pages 72-79, there are so many great shoots and articles in this issue though so have a read through it all!

I am so happy that my work is included in this magazine, it started when I saw a post on twitter with Candid asking for illustrators to email in their links so I emailed straight away and got a reply back saying they loved my work. They then told me the theme of the issue and asked me to do some illustrations, I struggled thinking of any concepts for the drawings until a few weeks after emailing and so I then submitted all my finished illustrations and now they're in the magazine.

Being a contributor to the magazine I got an invite to the CANDID magazine launch party which celebrated a year of CANDID and the fifth issue. It was hosted at Chinawhite in London (One of the most stylish place's I've ever been to, MASSIVE contrast to our 'hotel' room) and it was a really great night with a bit of 'networking' going on as well. So here's a little photo of me and my friend as a little memory of the night.

So all this came from a tweet so anyone out their looking to get their work out there it definitely pays to keep a beady eye on sites like Twitter, Facebook etc...

There won’t be an interview posted this week as I haven’t had time to write it up, it will be up next Wednesday though and it’s a lengthy one with a really succesful fashion photographer so hopefully it’s worth the wait!

So here is the first set, these sketches are posted up as I do them on my Instagram account scottwmason so follow me on there if you want to see more! Getting addicted to Instagram now, post at least 5 times a day.
See you tomorrow for the next set!

Rolands Commission

I got commissioned by my friend to draw a picture of him and also him in costume as Lady Gaga. The one on the left is wearing a T-shirt he made himself which I love the design of.

I'm available for commissions like this for £10 each, just email me at scottwmason@live.com if you're interested!

Colouring Walkthrough

A few people have asked how I colour and so I thought this week I would do a short walk-through to how I normally colour my images.

I start off sketching the image out roughly.
Then I ink it and rub out the pencil lines to make it all neat, never colour in with markers over pencil lines because that will look like someone shaded 50 shades of crap over your drawing.
I start off using a light purple to colour the shadows to then work over at a later stage.
I then start layering up the skin tones using yellows/pinks and flesh colours.
Half way through I start to add in some darker purples as well to add depth to the colours and image. Not too much though otherwise it will start looking like Barney (Who remembers Barney?)
Adding in some colouring pencil shading to add some texture into the lips/cheeks and hair.
At this stage I wouldn't mind a cheeky tipple of the JD he's holding...
I start to colour in the rest of the outfit and use a pencil to add texture and shading to the sheer shirt as markers would have been too flat a texture for that.Just need to colour the shoes and then I'm done!
I scan it in, fix it up and play around with the levels and contrast a bit to make it stand out and then the image is finished!

I hope this was at least slightly interesting to read or look at. If anyone would like a post in the future for something you're interested in that I do feel free to ask me!

Month Old!

My blog is a month old today! This image is just to say thanks to everyone that has visited so far, I’ve had over 200 unique visitors on the tumblr alone so wanted to say thank you and hope you continue reading!
The whole point of this drawing was her shoes (see ‘em?) but the photograph doesn’t show them aha.

Weekly Sketch Selection 5

I've decided to link this part of the blog in with good ol' Instagram! So I'll be posting my sketches as I do them during the week on my account and then compile them every Friday like so. So feel free to follow me on Instagram under 'scottwmason' .

Just thought it looks a bit more uniform! Plus the filters are flattering to the sketches and saves me scanning, not that lazyness would ever play a part in my decision of course.

Interview with Perry Curties

Perry Curties has been a Photographer for 15 years and has worked featured in magazines such as Arena, BLVD, GQ, Italian Vanity Fair and Project Magazine to name a few!. He also is the editor and co-founder of 125 Magazine and associate lecturer at London College of Fashion.

What made you choose Photography as a career?

Because I can't paint or draw.

What is your career highlight so far?

Every time I see a billboard with my picture on it.

Your Burka shoot seems quite risqué! Was there any backlash because of it?

None at all, it's the most republished thing I've ever shot.

As a lecturer do you feel it is necessary to do a degree? or is it just as okay to go out and learn it without the safety blanket of university?
University teaches skills other than just the subject you're meant to be learning but there's nothing wrong with learning on the job. The 2 methods probably create 2 different types of photographer.

Do you think assisting is a must to become a successful Fashion Photographer?
Yes.

Who are your personal Photography Heroes?

Constantly changing.

What do you wish you knew before going into this Industry?

How much money it would cost to get set up and working and how long it takes to become an overnight success.

Do you have any helpful tips for budding Fashion Photographers trying to break into the Industry?

Assist (good people) for as long as possible, minimum 5 years.

Describe working in the Industry in 3 words

Tough, creative and social

What are your plans for the future?

Top secret.

Friends Commission

I was commissioned by a friend to draw her and 3 friends, here is the outcome! Was fun to draw as I know them all myself and was interesting to see what parts of themselves I had to highlight in the images.

I decided to experiment a little bit whilst colouring these and so I cracked out the old colouring pencils to help add texture.

They're just a few photos to show the layering up of marker and then pencils. Took a while but pretty happy with the outcome. I'm always posting W.I.P. photos on my Instagram account (Hence why all these are perfectly square and have filters on them) follow me if you want to have a look at scottwmason.

I am also accepting commissions like these for just £10 each just email me at scottwmason@live.com if you're interested!

Atlas Illustration Walkthrough

I thought I would document my process of doing an Illustration, and now that the magazine it appears in is out I thought I would post up this! I hope it's at least slightly interesting to read or at least look at my messy workspace aha.

I was asked by a friend on the Atlas Magazine team if I wanted to create some work for the magazine and she told me the theme was 'Exploration' I have to admit to being a bit stumped for ideas for ages, could only think of people on little toy cars like the ones outside shopping centres and arcades, classy I know.

After a bit of sketching I thought of this concept and sketched it out, my sketches are rough as I mostly do details and everything whilst inking, mainly because it saves a bit of time.

Once I finish inking it looks a bit cleaner aha, you can actually see what it is now.

I then move onto colouring, I colour using Copic Ciao markers, I start off with colouring in the shadows with a light purple then move the colours up to skin tones then pinks to add a bit of life to the image so they don't look like an extra from a Resident Evil film.

I chose to colour the plane in pink/purple to add a bit of contrast and colour to the image as I didn't want it to just be gold/yellow tones. Spent quite a while layering up the colours for her afro's, can't have a flat 'fro.

I then went on Google and got some reference for the planets and tried my best to make them look like decent. Scanned it into Photoshop and edited my mistakes, and then it was finished!
So here is the final finished image:

I do like how this illustration turned out and even more happy that they chose to include it in the magazine! I hope you enjoyed reading this/looking at the pictures, I have got a more in-depth walk-through coming up showing me layering colours etc but thought this would be good to start off with!

Don't forget to see my illustrations and a lot of amazing work in the Atlas Magazine which can be read here:

Katie Rodgers (PaperFashion) Interview

Katie Rodgers is a very successful fashion illustrator and creator of the amazing blog Paper Fashion. I am absolutely in love with her work, she works traditionally (which I love) and her work seems to have real heart to it which isn't found often with fashion illustrations. Katie's illustrations have been published in ElleGirl, CosmoGirl and The Great Big Book of Fashion Illustration just to name a few.

Did you always know you wanted to be an Illustrator?

Nope! I always loved art, but never thought of it as a career. I went into industrial design instead... but somehow found my way back to illustration along the way (and so glad I did!).

What is your career highlight so far?

Being able to do what I absolutely love, and start my own business with it.

What are your goals for the future?

To learn to give up some of the control, and bring on other people to help expand and grow my business... to stationary, cards, products, etc.

Do you have any tips for illustrators just starting out?

Find you're unique voice, and never stop illustrating! Don't compare yourself to others, and go outside and just LOOK around.

Do you feel getting a degree is necessary or is it better to go out there and try things yourself

I learned so much getting a degree in industrial design. It was more about the experience that taught me more than I ever could've imagined. I do think education is important, but I don't think a degree in necessary. The internet is full of free information... and tools to help you get to where you want to be. Education helps to point you in the right direction, introduce you to amazing resources and people, and give you the opportunity to explore.

Do you have any tips on how to get your work noticed?

Don't be afraid to put it out there. Be confident, and use the internet and social media to your advantage. Also, try doing a unique project you haven't seen! I used to illustrate well known blogger's and influential people in the industry... things like that grab people's attention.

Do you feel Fashion Illustrations are as important as photographs?

Absolutely. They represent something different than a photo... photos often represent actual fashion, but illustrations represent the idea of fashion.

Where do you see illustrations going in the industry? It feels like they are being used and seen more frequently lately.

Who knows! I try not to plan too much... and just see where life takes me. I do want to start illustrating more of my own designs though.

Is there anything you wish you knew before coming into this industry?

Sometimes not knowing things is best. You discover things along the way that you can only understand from experience.

Describe working in the industry in just 3 words

Colourful. Imaginative. Thrilling.

Thank you Katie!

Camilla Dixon Interview

Camilla Dixon

I had the opportunity to be able to interview Fashion Illustrator Camilla Dixon. I really love her work and she has had an amazing career so far. I was interested in asking her questions which I wanted to know as someone going into the Industry, maybe as a ‘Fashion Illustrator’

Did you always know you wanted to go Into the Fashion Industry?

No, it never crossed my mind. I wanted to go to St Martins since I was about twelve, but wasn’t sure what course, I just liked drawing people, and was always mad about clothes but didn’t consider fashion - maybe because I thought it was just about sewing. I applied for painting but didn’t get in - so re-applied for Fashion slightly randomly, and I guess it went from there. The first day though I knew I was in the right place.

What made you choose Fashion Illustration instead of say, designing or photographing?

An obsession with drawing, stylising and image-making, along with a preference for working alone, almost no over-heads and immediate results, and of course a need to earn some instant cash, meant fashion illustration was the natural and only way to go.

Do you feel fashion illustrations are as important as photographs in the industry?

No, not commercially. When you see them though they’re a refreshing reminder that there is a creative side to fashion beyond the purely commercial, and they do have their practical uses, for example in trend-forecasting where clothes that don’t yet exist need to be depicted. Also of course at the initial stages of design in order to develop and communicate ideas. Perhaps then they are actually as or even more important after all - only less visible in the media.

Who influenced your style and motivated you to become an illustrator?

My tutor and great friend at college Howard Tangye was a massive influence, and taught me so much about figure drawing, fashion and teaching, I don’t know what I would be doing now if I hadn’t met him. Antonio Lopez’ work in the 60’s and 70’s was also hugely inspirational to me when I started working in the mid-nineties, a time when fashion illustration was an absolute no-no!

What made you begin teaching and doing workshops?

At college I was constantly in the life-room, either drawing or modelling for fashion illustration sessions with Howard and other tutors I got to know, so it was really a natural progression in a very familiar environment. It’s also been an indispensible source of income alongside the freelance work (you know when you’re going to be working and when you’ll get paid - not always the case with freelance) and I think helps to keep one sane when most of the work is pretty solitary.

Who was your favourite client to work for?

I designed a mannequin for Proportion London, which was really thrilling. She was a life-size 3D embodiment of my collage girl, so I had to work out and draw what she looked like from every angle, every part of the body so that a sculptor could construct her out of clay. When I finally got to see her in real life (the sculptor was in Belgium so I didn’t see the real thing till she was almost finished) it was quite extraordinary to see this figure whose side-view I’d been producing in miniature collage for years, standing up life-size staring back at me!

What is your best career memory so far?

Kylie Minogue coming to my rather grotty Northeast London studio for her portrait with no make-up, her boyfriend’s jumper and a slight hangover. She lay on the floor and was absolutely charming. When I rushed her home to Chelsea afterwards in my clapped-out car (she had to open a restaurant or something) she literally stopped traffic by just winding down the window to thank people for letting us through. I think it was almost as exciting and hilarious for her as it was for me.

Where do you see illustration going in this industry? I feel it’s being used more frequently in mixed media and experimenting?

That’s great news! I’m sure you’d know better than me about that.

What do you wish you knew before going into this industry?

Can’t think of anything.

And finally, describe working as an illustrator in 3 words.

Creative, Risky, Life-Saving!

Thank you for the Interview!

No problem.
