Candid Full Spread

Sorry I haven’t updated in a while, haven’t sketches much this week so I couldn’t make up a Sketch Compile. So I thought I would post up the full spread I did for Candid Magazine.
Remember you can read the magazine in its entirety here: http://issuu.com/candidonline/docs/candid_issue5

Published in SLiNK Magazine

I did a few illustrations for the Fashion Magazine SLiNK to go with a couple of articles. I had to illustrate 'relaxation', a 'Woman looking into a mirror' and a 'woman in a blue outfit' sounds simple enough but took me a while to think of a relaxation concept, to end up with bath and candles aha original huh?, and this is how they turned out. So chuffed that they appear in the magazine. This is available online as well as printed just have a butchers here:

It's a great magazine with some real interesting articles, it's aimed at curvy women, the shoots in there are great especially the 3D one in this issue. It also proves that bigger fashion can be just as stylish and look just as good which is really nice to see that market start to be catered too, so do have a look!

Published in CANDID Magazine

I illustrated a series of images for issue 5 of CANDID magazine 'Illustrating the Industry' to read the entire magazine and see my work click here:

My works on pages 72-79, there are so many great shoots and articles in this issue though so have a read through it all!

I am so happy that my work is included in this magazine, it started when I saw a post on twitter with Candid asking for illustrators to email in their links so I emailed straight away and got a reply back saying they loved my work. They then told me the theme of the issue and asked me to do some illustrations, I struggled thinking of any concepts for the drawings until a few weeks after emailing and so I then submitted all my finished illustrations and now they're in the magazine.

Being a contributor to the magazine I got an invite to the CANDID magazine launch party which celebrated a year of CANDID and the fifth issue. It was hosted at Chinawhite in London (One of the most stylish place's I've ever been to, MASSIVE contrast to our 'hotel' room) and it was a really great night with a bit of 'networking' going on as well. So here's a little photo of me and my friend as a little memory of the night.

So all this came from a tweet so anyone out their looking to get their work out there it definitely pays to keep a beady eye on sites like Twitter, Facebook etc...

Weekly Sketch Selection 6

There won’t be an interview posted this week as I haven’t had time to write it up, it will be up next Wednesday though and it’s a lengthy one with a really succesful fashion photographer so hopefully it’s worth the wait!
Instead of an interview I thought I would post two sets of sketch compiles, one today and one tomorrow. Been sketching away this week more than usual so have a lot more to show! So here is the first set, these sketches are posted up as I do them on my Instagram account scottwmason so follow me on there if you want to see more! Getting addicted to Instagram now, post at least 5 times a day.
See you tomorrow for the next set!

Rolands Commission

I got commissioned by my friend to draw a picture of him and also him in costume as Lady Gaga. The one on the left is wearing a T-shirt he made himself which I love the design of.

I'm available for commissions like this for £10 each, just email me at scottwmason@live.com if you're interested!

Colouring Walkthrough

A few people have asked how I colour and so I thought this week I would do a short walk-through to how I normally colour my images.

I start off sketching the image out roughly.
Then I ink it and rub out the pencil lines to make it all neat, never colour in with markers over pencil lines because that will look like someone shaded 50 shades of crap over your drawing.
I start off using a light purple to colour the shadows to then work over at a later stage.
I then start layering up the skin tones using yellows/pinks and flesh colours.
Half way through I start to add in some darker purples as well to add depth to the colours and image. Not too much though otherwise it will start looking like Barney (Who remembers Barney?)
Adding in some colouring pencil shading to add some texture into the lips/cheeks and hair.
At this stage I wouldn't mind a cheeky tipple of the JD he's holding...
I start to colour in the rest of the outfit and use a pencil to add texture and shading to the sheer shirt as markers would have been too flat a texture for that.Just need to colour the shoes and then I'm done!
I scan it in, fix it up and play around with the levels and contrast a bit to make it stand out and then the image is finished!

I hope this was at least slightly interesting to read or look at. If anyone would like a post in the future for something you're interested in that I do feel free to ask me!

Month Old!

My blog is a month old today! This image is just to say thanks to everyone that has visited so far, I’ve had over 200 unique visitors on the tumblr alone so wanted to say thank you and hope you continue reading!
The whole point of this drawing was her shoes (see ‘em?) but the photograph doesn’t show them aha.

Weekly Sketch Selection 5

I've decided to link this part of the blog in with good ol' Instagram! So I'll be posting my sketches as I do them during the week on my account and then compile them every Friday like so. So feel free to follow me on Instagram under 'scottwmason' .

Just thought it looks a bit more uniform! Plus the filters are flattering to the sketches and saves me scanning, not that lazyness would ever play a part in my decision of course.

Friends Commission

I was commissioned by a friend to draw her and 3 friends, here is the outcome! Was fun to draw as I know them all myself and was interesting to see what parts of themselves I had to highlight in the images.

I decided to experiment a little bit whilst colouring these and so I cracked out the old colouring pencils to help add texture.

They're just a few photos to show the layering up of marker and then pencils. Took a while but pretty happy with the outcome. I'm always posting W.I.P. photos on my Instagram account (Hence why all these are perfectly square and have filters on them) follow me if you want to have a look at scottwmason.

I am also accepting commissions like these for just £10 each just email me at scottwmason@live.com if you're interested!
